ReSoMal, the only ORS suitable for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition
ReSoMal is intended for the preparation of oral rehydration solution (ORS) exclusively in people suffering from severe acute malnutrition. It should be used under medical supervision in therapeutic feeding centers and should not be distributed directly to families.
Severely malnourished children commonly have potassium deficiency and various other mineral deficiencies, as well as abnormally high sodium levels. If dehydration occurs, they should be given specific ORS containing less sodium, more potassium, as well as magnesium, zinc and copper.
ReSoMal has been designed to meet this specific need. It should not be given to people who are well nourished or sick with cholera (in these cases, conventional ORS, according to the WHO formula, should be used).
